I am a big fan of the movie District 9. The District 9 movie has an engaging story line, good acting and of course Peter Jackson’s impeccable directing. I’ve always been a dork when it comes to good sci-fi movies and it’s cool when someone with limited resources makes a film which leaves you wanting more.

An unknown producer from Uruguay, Fede Alvarez, shelled out about $300 to create a cool video of a robot invasion in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. The four-minute short, “Ataque de Panico!” (Panic Attack) features ginormous (but slow-moving) weapon-wielding robots that blow stuff up.

Well, apparently nothing gets by Hollywood these days. The lucky duck told the BBC, “I uploaded ‘Ataque de Panico!’ on a Thursday and on Monday my inbox was totally full of emails from Hollywood studios.” Long story short, a bidding war ensued. The offer he pocketed: A $30 million deal with Sam “Spiderman” Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures. That’s a nice return on investment.

I’m starting a new segment here on T.B.T.L where I recommend a movie , you watch it and then realize how fucking awesome I am at picking movies. I will never recommend a movie like ‘Max Payne’ because if I ever find the Director (Smug Asshole) I’m going to ram a razor blade popsicle up his ass, wait for it to melt and then pull the stick out. Yes I hated ‘Max Payne’ that much!

In Bruges is a great movie. In fact it was my favorite movie of 2008 and I watch an ass load of movies. It’s a disturbing dark comedy with Colin Farrell (don’t, just don’t), Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes.

I’m not going to give you a synopsis about the movie because I’m not fucking Roger Ebert, but if this segment is going to work you will have to trust me.  Watch the trailer below and then rent the movie.

I’ve been a long time Pearl Jam since the first album ‘Ten’ which cemented them alongside Nirvana as the best of the Grunge bands in the early nineties. I saw Pearl Jam’s first show in the Boston area when they were touring for the ‘Ten’ album on Lansdowne Street across from Fenway at a club called ‘Axis’. The show was amazing, one which I shall never forget and I have been a fan of Pearl Jam ever since.

With that said, Pearl Jam has had its ups and downs and I believe can be inconsistent with their sound which has lead to a couple of less than stellar records. Both the self-titled  ‘Pearl Jam’ and ‘Riot Act’ contained a couple of good songs, but overall I find both of these albums largely forgettable.

When Pearl Jam is in high gear and on target they release kick ass albums like ‘Ten’,  ‘Vs’ and ‘Yield’ where the music hits you emotionally, gives you a kick in the ass and makes you pay attention to the message. The message, however, is hard to translate at times due to the vocal style of Eddie Vedder, who though blessed with a distinctive voice and the ability to convey raw emotion, at times is impossible to decipher.

Now along comes ‘Into the Wild’, the Eddie Vedder score for the movie directed by Sean Penn, based on the novel by Jon Krakauer (good book review at brocknrollblog). Vedder has crafted what can only be described as a truly stunning album. ‘Into the Wild’ is thought provoking, mesmerizing, almost hypnotic in its beauty and simplicity. Vedders voice is both powerful and intimate, never out of control which on previous efforts does make it difficult to understand. With the majority of songs clocking in at under 3 minutes, its not the song length which stands out, but how effortless each one flows into the other taking you on a memorable ride ‘Into the Wild’.

This album ‘Into the Wild’ is amazing and a couple of my favorites tracks are ‘Hard Sun’, ‘Rise’ and an anthem which seems to encapsulate all the recent financial mess in ‘Society’. Enjoy and thank me later.

I first saw Candlebox at the Orpheum Theater in Boston back in 93′ and was blown away by their performance. I consider myself an avid concert goer and in the late eighties, early nineties witnessed hundreds of shows in and around the greater Boston area, yet Candlebox stuck out because of their ferocity on stage. Oh and did I mention the two lesbians making out in the first row? Yeah, that happened too and it was, ahem, pretty good I guess.

I picked up the latest Candlebox album ‘Into the Sun’ with little expectation and fairly certain it didn’t include lesbians. Even though I was right about the lesbians, my expectations were shattered by this album. This is my pick for ALBUM OF THE YEAR and I don’t give a shit what else comes out between now and the end of the year, it’s that good.

I am not going to give a long winded review because you probably have one finger on the mouse ready to click to some porn site (perv!), or you’ve fallen asleep mid-sentence, but I can’t emphasize enough how incredible this album is. The band sounds fantastic with three out of four original members in place and lead singer Kevin Martin’s vocals are top notch. The only problem for Candlebox is not as many people are going to give it a listen as would have had it been earlier on in their career and this is evidenced by comments over at MetalSucks.

Give a listen below, my favorites tracks (i personally like them all) are Bitches Brewin, Surrendering, Miss you and Breathe Me In. Take a peak at this photo (like you didn’t notice it), put your headphones on and lets go back to the Orpheum circa 1993.
